What's Inside a Traditional Slovenian Easter Basket | Slovenian Easter Blessing Basket

Time to start prepping for our 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁 🐰🐣🌷

𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 is my most FAVOURITE Holy holiday to CELEBRATE — Easter is the most important Christian holiday in Slovenia that holds many different traditions. It is our tradition to prepare a basket of food and bring it to the church to be blessed. In Slovenian we call this ‘Žegen’ — The traditional Slovenian Easter foods that I include in my basket are; decorated eggs, ham, salami, horseradish, bread, cheese, salt, wine, candle, potica & other homemade sweets. Each of these items hold a special symbolic meaning:

Coloured or uncoloured eggs ❥ indicate hope, new life, and Christ rising from his tomb

Ham ❥ symbolizes great joy and abundance in celebration of Christ's resurrection

Sausage or salami ❥ are symbolic of the chains of death that were broken when Jesus rose from the dead, as well as of God's generosity

Horseradish ❥ symbolic of the nails used and the bitter sacrifice of Christ and His tears

Bread ❥ represents the staff of life given by God

Cheese ❥ symbol to remind us of moderation

Potica ❥ A sweet yeasty dough that is reminiscent of the risen Lord

Salt ❥ is present to add zest to life and preserve us from corruption.

Sweets ❥ suggest the promise of eternal life or good things to come

Candle ❥ represents Christ the light of world.

Here are a list of some delicious traditional Slovenian treats that can help prepare you for your Easter blessings basket and dessert table!
