World Bee Day highlights the vital role bees play in our environment and celebrates their importance in ecosystems worldwide. Slovenia has a rich history of beekeeping, dating back to the 18th century when Anton Janša pioneered modern beekeeping techniques. His work helped raise awareness about how crucial bees are for pollination, biodiversity, and food production.

Since then, beekeeping has grown into a vital tradition in Slovenia and across the world, supporting ecosystems and local economies. Bees have existed for millions of years — the oldest bee fossil found dates back over 100 million years!

Did You Know?

Slovenia has one of the richest beekeeping traditions in the world, with around 90,000 beekeepers in a population of just two million. Slovenian honey is celebrated for its purity, quality, and flavor, making it an essential part of Slovenian cuisine and culture.

How to Celebrate World Bee Day

  • Plant a bee-friendly garden: Include flowers, fruits, and vegetables like sunflowers, thyme, dill, and fennel.

  • Connect with local beekeepers: Learn how to support bees in your own garden or outdoor space.

  • Raise awareness online: Share posts about World Bee Day 2025 and bee conservation to educate others.

How I Love to Enjoy Honey

One of my favourite ways to enjoy Slovenian honey is on top of my homemade Slovenian crepes (Palačinke) — a sweet, simple treat that highlights the rich, floral flavors of local honey.
